First Nations 12: The Pursuit of Justice

Create a "Special Edition" magazine that looks back at the Pursuit of Justice by BC First Naitons from  the 1950's to 1997.  Your magazine will have the following:

Section 1 - Main Story  Explain the following about the Pursuit of Justice:

  • what it was
  • when when it began
  • why it began
  • the impact it had on the people of BC.

Section 2 - Court Cases  Choose THREE of these court cases. Summarize the facts about each case in a separate magzine article: 

  • the Calder case
  • the Guerin case
  • the Sparrow case
  • Van der Peet v. the Queen
  • Delgamuukw v. the Queen
For each article, be sure to include:

  • dates
  • bands and individuals involved
  • events
  • chargesoutcome
  • impact on First Nations people in BC

Include pictures from the internet that support your information.

Section 3 - Feature Stories  Explain TWO of these topics in detail: 
  • The Constitution Act
  • George Manuel
  • The Constitution Express

Your magazine should also have:

  • a title page with date, price, picture and the name of the magazine
  • pictures for your stories
  • appropriate advertisments
  • titles for all stories
  • something extra like a crossword, editorial, etc.

Your assignment MUST include a bibliography.  To make this easier, use the links under "Writing Bibliographies" in the left column.

Evaluation:

Quality of information and writing in stories - using your own words - 40 marks
Citing sources of informaiton (bibliography) - 10 marks
Cover - 10 marks
Technical aspects of writing (spelling, grammar) - 10 marks
Layout (neatness, headlines, pictures, extras) - 15 marks
Use of class time - 15 marks

Total - 100 marks
